About the campaign
Who are we?
2precious2mine is a canopy for the many community groups campaigning to protect New Zealand’s precious conservation areas and wildlife from the threat of mining. We believe that the magnificent and unique protected lands and waters of Aotearoa are far too precious to mine – and we invite you to join us in making this message heard.
You can visit or contact the groups protecting our precious places on your behalf, find out more, and take action. Sign-up to receive updates,
including a submission guide on the Government's proposed changes to the law protecting our precious places.
What's the issue?
The Government is proposing to remove the only real protection available – Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act – from our prime conservation lands and waters. This is the leading-edge of a campaign by the mining industry and the Government to facilitate more and more mining of New Zealand’s precious natural environment, with its inevitable destructive impact on the communities and ecosystems that depend on it.
New Zealand is at an economic crossroads. The Government’s ‘rip, shit and bust’ approach to economic management that pits economic production against the environment is out of step with global trends and undermines New Zealand’s clean green image. Clean technology and a green economy is the new industrial revolution New Zealand is in a great position to surf the “green wave” with its precious protected land and clean green image. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform our economy and embody the clean green New Zealand we claim to be. If we don’t move in the right direction, we will be playing catch-up for decades to come. Greenpeace NZ
